TV Casting News: Dean Cain joins the upcoming CBS pilot 'Supergirl'

Here's a super TV casting news I can get super excited and has a reason to watch the new series about...former Lois & Clark's Dean Cain along with former Supergirl movie star Helen Slater has reportedly landed a guest-starring roles in the upcoming CBS pilot Supergirl starring Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash).

Supergirl Casts the Heroic Helen Slater and Dean Cain in Top-Secret Roles

How’s this for super-meta casting: Helen Slater and Dean Cain have landed guest-starring roles on CBS’s Supergirl, TVLine has learned.

Slater, of course, played Kara on the big screen in 1984’s Supergirl, while Cain starred as the Man of Steel in ABC’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. And both guest-starred on the WB/CW Superman drama Smallville, Slater in the role of Clark/Kal-El’s Krypton mom Lara, and Cain as the immortal Dr. Curtis Knox.

Details on who the pair will be playing in the pilot are being kept under lock and key (but feel free to speculate away in the comments). 

As previously reported, Laura Benanti (Nashville) will play Kara’s birth mother, Alura Zor-El, who continues to guide her daughter across space and time.

The cast also includes Grey’s Anatomy‘s Chyler Leigh as Kara’s foster sister Alex, Homeland‘s David Harewood as Department of Extra-Normal Operations chief Hank Henshaw, Ally McBeal‘s Calista Flockhart as Kara’s boss Cat Grant and Desperate Housewives‘ Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen.

Former Superman Returns star Brandon Routh is currently a recurring guest star in CW's Arrow (starring Stephen Amel and Katie Cassidy) as Ray Palmer aka The Atom. His character might join the upcoming new Arrow/Flash superhero team-up spinoff that's in the works at CW, according to a Deadline article below...

EXCLUSIVE: DC Comics superheroes are uniting in a potential new drama series at the CW, a spinoff from hits Arrow and The Flash that will feature several fan-favorite recurring actors/characters from both shows. I have learned that the network has teamed with Arrow creators Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim for a project eyed for next season toplined by Brandon Routh, Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller and Caity Lotz.

The untitled project, now in development, is described as a superhero team-up show. Routh, Miller and Garber will reprise their popular DC Comics characters  — Arrow‘s Ray Palmer/The Atom (Routh), Flash villain Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Miller), and Flash‘s Dr. Martin Stein (Garber). Because her Arrow character Sara Lance was killed off, with her sister Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) taking over as the Black Canary, it is unclear whether Lotz will play the same or new superhero.

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced today the surprise casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred (as in Bruce Wayne's butler/mentor) in ’s untitled Man of Steel follow-up Batman Vs. Superman starring Amy Adams (Lois Lane),  Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne/Batman),  Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman),  (Perry White), and  (Martha Kent) opens in theaters May 6, 2016.

Jesse Eisenberg As Lex Luthor & Jeremy Irons As Alfred In Superman-Batman Pic

BREAKING: Two more key roles have been cast in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman-Batman movie for Warner Bros. Jesse Eisenberg will play Superman’s arch enemy Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Bruce Wayne’s butler/mentor Alfred in the pic, which is set for a May 6, 2016 release. They join Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent in what Warners is billing as a sequel to its Man Of Steel; Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne; and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Man of Steel stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane also are in the new pic. 

Both castings show the young-ification of the DC Comics franchise; Caine is 15 years older than Irons, and Gene Hackman, the most prominent of past big-screen Lex Luthors, was in his late 40s and early 50s when he played the role. Eisenberg is 30. Irons, who takes over from Michael Caine who played the role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, joins fellow Oscar winner Affleck and Oscar nominees Adams, Fishburne and Lane in the movie; Eisenberg was nominated for an Oscar for The Social Network.

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” Snyder said in Warner Bros’ announcement of the castings today. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.” As for Irons: “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman,” Snyder said. “It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Chris Terrio is currently writing the script from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns executive producing.

Movie Casting News: Gal Gadot cast as Wonder Woman in Man of Steel sequel 'Batman Vs. Superman' film

Warner Bros. announced today that Fast & Furious star Gal Gadot has been cast as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder's upcoming sequel to Man of Steel, the still untitled Batman Vs. Superman or Superman Vs. Batman film, which starts filming in February 2014. The film is slated for a July 17, 2015 theatrical release.

Superman, the film that will see Henry Cavill square off with Ben Affleck. Gadot has been in three Fast & Furious films, as well as Knight And Day and Date Night. Given that Warner Bros has bolstered its starpower with Affleck and has Cavill returning from the summer hit Man Of Steel, it makes sense to groom new stars in the supporting roles, the way that Marvel has done. All this is clearly gearing toward the long-awaited Justice League film, all based on the DC Comics characters.

Comic-Con 2013: Zack Snyder announces 'Man of Steel ' sequel (introducing Batman) with Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane returning!

Super exciting news today at International San Diego Comic-Con 2013, not only that Man of Steel director Zack Snyder and star  (Clark Kent/Kal-El) were in attendance for the Warner Bros./DC Comics Superman's 75th Anniversary celebration, Snyder officially announced and confirmed a sequel for one of this summer's mega blockbuster box-office hit, Man of Steel, which is set to be released for Summer 2015! Batman/Bruce Wayne is said to be featured and introduced in MOS 2 and has released a Superman/Batman logo (see image above ^)! Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), and Diane Lane (Martha Kent) are said to be returning in the sequel! Yay, so glad to hear this official and confirmed news this afternoon. I've been waiting for official MOS 2 news with pin and needles, lol..

At the end of Warner Bros.’ massive panel, Zack Snyder was introduced onstage in a surprise appearance, which unfortunately was spoiled a bit earlier today.  Snyder took the lectern from moderator Chris Hardwick, “because some shit’s gonna happen up here,” he said.  He thanked the audience for supporting Man of Steel, and then said he knows there’s a lot of speculation about the sequel.  Snyder continued:

“It’s official that we are gonna make another Superman movie… The truth is you don’t want me to tell you what the movie’s about, but I can say that maybe there’s a single element that will be in the film that I could help you out with…”

Snyder then introduced Man of Steel actor Harry Lennix to the stage to read something, saying, “We’re not adapting this thing, but it is the thing that will help tell this story.”  He proceeded to read a passage from the Frank Miller comic The Dark Knight Returns.  More after the jump.

Lennix read:

“I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your most private moments. I want you to remember my hand at your throat.  I want you to remember the one man who beat you.”

Director Zack Snyder Unites Superman and Batman in One Explosive New Film

The new film brings back Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers. This time, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers, along with Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan.

Thomas offered, “Whilst our ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack’s fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction. His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe and we can’t wait to see what Zack does with these characters.”

The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

Variety reports that Man of Steel star is in talks to star and replace Tom Cruise in the upcoming Guy Ritchie film The Man From U.N.C.L.E

With the news coming out that Tom Cruise had fallen off “Man From U.N.C.L.E,” Warner Bros. has acted fast to find his replacement having entered talks with Henry Cavill to star.

He would co-star with Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander with Guy Ritchie helming.
The film is an adaptation of the 1960s TV series which followed two agents of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement as they fought the evil agents of Thrush.

Ritchie will also produce along with producing partner Lionel Wigram. John Davis is also producing.

The interesting part about this casting is that Cavill actually met for the Hammer role when Cruise had already been negotiations for the lead. The studio obviously has a great relationship with him having worked with him on “Man of Steel” and had also been looking at him for a co-starring role opposite Chris Hemsworth in “In the Heart of the Sea.” Read full Variety article here.

Reitman’s Montecito Pictures is producing. Welling will play Brian Drew, a veteran quarterback in the crossroads of his career, in the story about a Cleveland Browns GM (Costner) who attempts to trade up for the first pick in the NFL Draft and save football in the city. Welling, the former Smallville star repped by WME, just wrapped a supporting turn in the JFK pic Parkland, and this one has also began shooting including during the real NFL Draft last month.

Movie News: Henry Cavill to star in Edward Zwick's 'The Great Wall'

Variety reports that is in negotiations to star in director Edward Zwick’s (The Last Samurai) period epic The Great Wall.

The film “looks at the mystery behind how China’s Great Wall was constructed.” Zwick wrote the screenplay with Marshall Herskovitz, based on a story by World War Z author Max Brooks and Thomas Tull.

Henry will next be seen in action, thriller The Cold Light of Day with Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver. It opens in theaters April 6th!

Movie News: Amy Adams to star and produce in adaptation of Steve Martin's novel 'An Object of Beauty'

Amy Adams is set to star as Lacey Yeager in and produce an adaptation of Steve Martin‘s novel An Object of Beauty.

According to Collider via THR, the film “follows an art entrepreneur over 15 years of her life, as she acquires her own gallery, travels the world and tangles romantically with a series of men, including one who becomes a famous artist.”  This is the second Martin novel to be adapted into a film; he wrote and co-starred in the adaptation of his 2005 novel Shopgirl.

EW reports that Laurence Fishburne is cast as Perry White, the Daily Planet's editor-in-chief in the new Superman, Man of Steel film starring  as Clark Kent/Superman,  as Lois Lane,  as Martha Kent,  as Jonathan Kent, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Julia Ormond as Lara,  Russell Crowe as Jor-El. Antje Traue, Harry Lennix and Christopher Meloni also star.      

I must say great casting all-around! Can't wait to find out who they will cast as Jimmy Olsen! Also, this is unexpected, but rather great casting choice! Laurence Fishburne is a great actor and another Oscar Nominee. I'm sure he'll be great as Perry White.

According to Deadline, Emmy Award winner Julia Ormond (Temple Grandin, First Knight, Sabrina, Legends of The Fall) is currently in talks for the role of Lara or Lara-El (Superman's Kryptonian mother) for the up-coming  Man of Steel film starring  as Clark Kent/Superman,  as Lois Lane,  as Martha Kent,  as Jonathan Kent, and Michael Shannon as General Zod. If Ormond gets the part, she will play opposite Russell Crowe (who was in talks to star as Jor-El in the previous post).

Variety.com reports today that Academy Award winner Australian actor Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind) is currently in talks and close to being cast in the role of Jor-El (Superman's Kryptonian father) for the up-coming  Man of Steel film starring  as Clark Kent/Superman,  as Lois Lane,  as Martha Kent,  as Jonathan Kent, and Michael Shannon as General Zod.

The mercurial Aussie is in negotiations to take the role in "Man of Steel," which Zack Snyder is on board to direct with Brit thesp Henry Cavill set to play Superman. Warner Bros. had no comment on Crowe's casting.

Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon have already joined the cast. David Goyer penned the script and developed the story with Nolan who, as is his way, has kept plot details under wraps. Charles Roven will produce along with Emma Thomas, Nolan and Deborah Snyder. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are producing for Legendary Pictures.


With production set to start next month, Jor-El was one of the last roles to cast, though they also are looking for a big name to play Superman's biological mother.

Brando was 54 when he appeared in Richard Donner's 1978 classic; Crowe is 47. Other names that had gone out for the role included Sean Penn and Clive Owen, Crowe was the final choice.

EXCLUSIVE: Amy Adams has formally been set to star in Paul Thomas Anderson's untitled film, which begins production later this month. She will play the wife of the character played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. He plays a man who returns from witnessing the horrors of WWII, and in an attempt to find himself, he forms a belief system that catches on in the 1950s.

The Weinstein Company acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film last month just before the Cannes Film Festival. Megan Ellison is producing through her Annapurna Productions banner, along with JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi, with Ted Schipper exec producing.

Adams is coming off her Oscar-nominated turn in The Fighter, and she will do this film before starting production on Man of Steel, playing Lois Lane in the Zack Snyder-directed Superman franchise reboot. Adams will next be seen in the Walter Salles-directed On The Road, which is being shopped for domestic distribution, and Disney's Muppets. She's repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and WME. Erica Durance cast in a new Canadian TV pilot 'Saving Hope'

According to Zap2it, Erica Durance has booked herself in a new Canadian pilot series, Saving Hope, a medical drama.

Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane on seven seasons of "Smallville," has booked a new pilot. The Alberta native is sticking with her Canadian roots to work on "Saving Hope," a CTV pilot.

Scheduled to begin production June 22, "Saving Hope" comes from executive producer Ilana Frank, who is at the helm of "Rookie Blue," a Toronto-based cop drama that has crossed over to American audiences on ABC.

Superman Movie News: Michael Shannon cast as General Zod in new Superman 'Man of Steel' film

Superman Sunday! It seems like every other Sunday a new actor is announced and cast in 's new Superman: Man of Steel film. This past Sunday (April 10th), Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Revolutionary Road) was just cast as General Zod! Two Sunday's ago, (Fighter, Julie & Julia, Sunshine Cleaning, Enchanted) was cast as joining (Jonathan Kent),  (Martha Kent), and  (Clark Kent/Superman) in the already impressive cast (see pic of them below)  list thus far of the new Superman film.

Michael Shannon Cast as General Zod

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder's new Superman film, titled "Man of Steel."

Snyder stated, "Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."

As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes' "Revolutionary Road," with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series "Boardwalk Empire," from executive producer Martin Scorsese. He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics', "Take Shelter," from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Stop the presses! LA Time's Hero Complex reports that three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (Fighter, Julie & Julia, Sunshine Cleaning, Enchanted) has just been cast as (which is currently trending worldwide on Twitter! Just search: Lois Lane) in 's new Superman: Man of Steel film! Amy Adams joins (Jonathan Kent),  (Martha Kent), and  (Clark Kent/Superman) in the already impressive cast (see pic of them below)  list thus far of the new Superman film.

By the way, this is a surprise news (much like Henry Cavill as CK/Superman) as none of my Casting Lois Lane for the new Superman film (Wishlist) was picked, but I love Amy Adams, she's one of my favorite actresses. I'm sure she'll be great as Lois. She's a very good actress too and I love pretty much every film she was in. I wonder if she'll dye her hair brown though...Anyway, Amy Adams also now joins The Many Faces of Lois Lane (Then & Now) (will update this post soon with her on the list...).

Superman News: Amy Adams will be Lois Lane

This just in — three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams will play journalist Lois Lane in Hollywood’s revival of “Superman.”

The 36-year-old star got the news on Sunday from director Zack Snyder, who phoned her from Paris, where he was promoting his just-opened film, “Sucker Punch.” There had been a crush of Hollywood interest in the lead female role in the Warner Bros. project but Snyder said that after meeting with Adams, she was the clear choice to take on a character that dates back to 1938 and has long represented the strong, professional woman who can hold her own against any man – even if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

“There was a big, giant search for Lois,” Snyder said. “For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.”

Snyder declined to discuss the precise prominence of Lois in the story or any plot details about the film but he said the role is “a linchpin” to the project and that he considers it essential that Lois — an FDR-era creation – arrives on screen in 2012 with contemporary appeal and spirit.   “It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes.  That applies to Lois as well. Amy Adams To Star As Lois Lane In The New Superman Movie From Warner Bros. Pictures And Legendary Pictures

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Amy Adams will star in the coveted role of Lois Lane in the new Zack Snyder-directed feature film.

Snyder remarked, "Second only to Superman himself, the question of who will play Lois Lane is arguably what fans have been most curious about. So we are excited to announce the casting of Amy Adams, one of the most versatile and respected actresses in films today. Amy has the talent to capture all of the qualities we love about Lois: smart, tough, funny, warm, ambitious and, of course, beautiful."

Amy Adams will star opposite Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Diane Lane and Kevin Costner, as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Amy Adams was recently honored with her third Oscar nomination in five years, for her performance in the true-life drama "The Fighter," with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. She previously earned Oscar nominations for her work in the acclaimed films "Doubt" and "Junebug." She has also starred in such diverse hits as "Enchanted," "Julie and Julia," "Charlie Wilson's War," and "Catch Me If You Can." She will next be seen in Walter Salles' "On the Road" with Viggo Mortensen and "The Muppets."

Deadline reports that actor Kevin Costner is now confirmed and officially cast by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures as Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent/Superman's adopted father. Kevin Costner was recently rumored to be playing Jonathan Kent, but is not confirmed until now...Diane Lane (love her!!! great choice for Martha Kent!) is confirmed and you can read the Deadline article below...

It's all over but the press release! Almost a month after Deadline revealed that Kevin Costner was in early talks for a lead role in Superman: Man of Steel, I hear that he has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, the adoptive dad of Clark Kent. Costner will join Henry Cavill, who is playing the title role, and Diane Lane, who is playing Martha Kent, his adopted mother.

Zack Snyder is directing for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. The Superman film is being produced by Chris Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. The new Superman is targeted for release in December 2012.
